3 Ways to Wear: Black Lace Shorts

Updated: Jul 11, 2022

Hello friends! One of my favorite things to do is search styling options on Pinterest (Check out my page here!). But oh my goodness do I doubly love a good "one item of clothing done several different ways." Even if I don't own a particular piece of clothing, I can A) choose to purchase said item and wear it 20+ ways according to Pinterest style influencers, or B) it gets my styling creative juices flowing, and I start imaging pairing my clothes in different ways.

I'm not going to lie, the 20+ versions of one item of clothing does get me overwhelmed, because not only do I usually (80% of the time) not have that piece in my wardrobe, but I don't have the other items in my wardrobe either. However, I'm so impressed and inspired by the smaller versions of this, which is why I'm bringing to you 3 Ways to Wear Black Lace Shorts.

Let's keep it simple, fun, and achievable!

Black lace shorts, black T-shirt, gold necklace
NECKLACE: Nordstrom Rack | The SAK Triple Row Statement Necklace - T SHIRT: Old Navy | Black T-shirt - SHORTS: Loft | Black Lace Pleated Pull On Shorts

OPTION 1

Let's break this down. Option 1 is the easiest, it's the "I don't have time to think about anything", option. You look pulled together with a monochromatic outfit. The shorts have lace detailing so that elevates the outfit, but the T-shirt says "hey I can get spaghetti sauce on me, and it's going to be OK." Now let's talk about the game changer, because a black T-shirt and black lace shorts is just alright, but the necklace is what makes this outfit interesting and fun. It reminds me of something historical, or goddess like if you will, which brings a smile to my face. (What's actually making me smile right now is my daughter jumping up and down on the couch and whooping off camera)

BONUS: Alternative options would be swapping the black T-shirt for a black blouse, or trying out different necklines of the T-shirt. Also, I went with a gold necklace, but if you're a silver gal (hey Mom), go silver.

OUTFIT DETAILS:

T-shirt: Old Navy | Lux Crew Neck T-shirt (I bought mine years ago, here's something similar)

Shorts: Ann Taylor Loft | Black lace pleated pull up shorts (sold out, but here they are in navy)

black lace shorts, black and white blouse, silver pendant

OPTION 2

Swap out the T-shirt for a patterned blouse. I chose to stick with black in the pattern because there's something about black shorts that feels sophisticated to me, and I wanted to keep each outfit option a little elevated. This outfit says I'm a little more pulled together, and I'm not afraid to play with proportions. Also a really good option if you're going somewhere with lots of air conditioning because the sleeves help.

BONUS: Try a blouse with a different color, like a sapphire blue. You can always bring it back to black or find something with black in it to keep the outfit sophisticated.

OPTION 3

Sticking again with the basic palette of black and white, this blouse reverses Option 2. I love the detail in the sleeves of this blouse, and I also love that the texture of the pebble crepe fits so nicely with the lace detailing on the shorts. Because the shorts are black lace on black cotton you have to be somewhat close to see the detail. This means you can play quite a bit with your top's material. If you're going monochromatic or only adding a color to the pattern, playing with textures is a great way to add interest to your outfit without having to think hard about the combinations.

BONUS: Try a bigger pattern of polka dot, or a floral print.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Can you wear these shorts more than 3 ways, yes you can girl! My brain was on fire after I took these photos, and for a moment I thought I would only wear my black shorts for the rest of summer in order to try out all the combinations that were now infiltrating my brain. But let us take a step back, take a breath, and remember getting dressed in the morning should be fun and stress free (as much as possible). Even getting three outfits out of one item is a major win in my book.

Let me know which outfit you like the best, and which combo you think you might try yourself!
