A Nod to the 1960's with a Modern Twist

My hair might say I'm a 1970's gal, but my love of geometric prints says I have room in my heart for the 1960's as well. At first glance this dress is not that exciting. It's a jersey dress in an A-line silhouette. You have to add something to it to make it special and modernize it. The trick with a large geometric pattern is not to go full on 1960's, and also not to overwhelm the already large print.

Fashion houses and designers like Pucci and Pierre Cardin in the 1960's developed color and pattern for women's wearable fashion in a new and exciting way. Adding geometric touches to their clothing on top of bright colors made for a fun new groovy way of dressing.

So how can we take this idea and modernize it without looking like we're going back to the 1960's? Combine it with modern silhouettes, materials, and slightly less bold patterns. This dress, which is definitely not a Pucci or Pierre Cardin (Nordstrom Rack my friends), caught my eye because I love color and pattern. It's also a jersey dress which means it's very sticky hands and sunscreen hugs friendly. I've paired it with a few different elements to show a work appropriate, party, and any day look.
For work, I've paired this dress with a jersey jacket. The jacket is a better and thicker quality piece. So stay away from those sweet little jam hands, and save the jacket for when you're on your way to your job or outing. Along with the jacket I've paired it with a large pendant necklace. Nothing flashy, just a gold pendant. This won't distract from the dress, but it pulls everything together.
Another option is going with a statement earring (mine are sold out, but these are similar). This is a great look for a party. There's nothing stopping you or hindering you from having a great time. Add the jacket if it's a cooler daytime/evening get together.

Last, but not least, wear this dress with a statement necklace and belt for a pulled together look that can take you from the park to the art museum to brunch with friends. You look polished, but with a fun twist. Don't forget to share your new knowledge of fashion history, and definitely check out the fashion houses looks from the 1960's, they are inspiring!
