When the calendar turns to February, I can't help myself. I want to begin dipping my toe into Spring, but it's still quite cold where I live. So how do we transform our winter wardrobes into that transitional time where we want brighter Spring colors, different silhouettes, and crisper looks? I've got a few tips and tricks to help us transition into the month of love and friendship together.
WHY CHANGE/UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE
For me, I get bored very easily with the same outfits day after day, month after month. I've tried doing a 3-4 month seasonal capsule wardrobe before, and it just doesn't work for me. However, bringing in a few new pieces and rotating things back into my wardrobe makes getting dressed exciting. I'm always looking for ways to change things up based on the month, what's happening outside, and any celebrations we will be doing during the month. I find that this simple rotation brings joy to getting dressed in the morning, and adds energy into my life.
THINGS I'M PUTTING AWAY...for now
I'm ready to say goodbye to my apres ski sweaters and outfits, like fair isle, and welcome in some brighter sweaters in corals, pinks, oranges and burgundies. I'm also still not quite ready to bring back my bright red clothing. The last thing I'm putting away for now are my holiday items. Could I rework some of these items? Yes, but my love for them has dwindled and I need to take a break in order to rework them at a later date. So into storage they go.
THINGS I'M KEEPING OUT
Anything black. For me, February is the last month I want to wear black for a while. When March comes, I find myself drawn to navy and want nothing to do with black until summer. So I'm going easy on navy and wearing all of my black items of clothing as my neutral.
Statement sweaters in white, creams, & mushroom colors. Where I live, we are still in the middle of winter so I can't fully commit to Spring yet. However, wearing my winter whites feels like a huge refresh in my closet, even though I'm not adding anything. I'm pairing these winter whites with my black items for a nice color contrast, and it also mimics the snow outside. Whenever you feel confused about what colors to wear, look to nature.
The last thing I'm keeping out is my winter jewelry. I'm not ready to transition into wooden necklaces, or turquoise pieces just yet. So sticking with silver and gold necklaces and earrings with some pops of CZ or glass is a great way to glam up any neutral outfit, or when I'm wearing black.
THINGS I'M PULLING BACK OUT/LOOKING FOR
Any item in pink, wine, or coral. Depending on your own style, you can go muted with these shades to ease yourself into the month of love and friendship, or go bold. I like to do both. Sometimes I need that shock of bright color in my makeup and wardrobe to wake up my skin and my mood. Sometimes I want to be more subdued depending on what I'm doing that day and go for these shades in muted tones, like blush.
Shirts. A gal can dream that we will have slightly warmer weather some days in February, and this is when I'm pulling out my button downs and blouses. Spring is a great time for a structured shirt, and February can be a fun time to start playing with these shirts as well. Feel free to add a long sleeve shirt underneath for added warmth if necessary.
I hope this article was helpful on things to keep, put away, and look for to liven up your winter wardrobe. As always, play with textures, pattern, and shine for a killer outfit combination. Enjoy, and let me know how you get on.
