How to Layer in Winter & Still Look Good

This concept can be a tricky one for anyone who lives in the Midwest. We see winter temps and immediately want to wear nothing but the warmest clothes. Especially if you are someone who works from home (stay-at-home moms included, because yes it is a job), it can be easy to fall into the sweats or baggy everything outfits out of sheer need to stay warm.
LAYER LIKE A LUMBERJACK
On a recent shopping trip I was mulling over some blouses and trying to figure out how to wear them in the winter when it hit me! Think like a lumberjack (just go with me), and wear something under your shirts besides a cami. I know. Mind blown. I immediately ran to the long sleeve t-shirt and thermal department, grabbed a few options and voila! I figured out how to stay warm in winter while still being able to wear blouses without a jacket. Keep in mind that this does change the neckline, so you'll want to watch your accessories to make sure you're pulling the eye up and down and not stopping right at the neck. Or find some long sleeve undershirts that have a v-neck just like most blouses and wear that underneath. Problem solved.
UNDER JACKETS
This technique also works great under jackets, and adds a bonus layer of texture if you go with a thermal. You'll have a cool acres ski, midwest mountaineering vibe going on. Just make sure you don't take it too far with giant boots. That is, unless you are a mountaineer or are skiing and then please follow protocol for safety. I recently wore the above outfit while running errands on a blustery day and was quite warm the whole time.

LAST THOUGHT
Don't forget that tall knee length or higher boots can also be considered a layering piece. This footwear has two benefits. It adds texture like leather, suede, etc. wheel also giving your legs another layer of warmth. Whenever it is truly cold outside, or the snow is so high it's almost at your knees, grab those skinny pants and add your taller riding boots for an extra layer of texture and warmth. Some of my favorite brands for boots are Sam Edelman, Born, and Marc Fisher.
