How to Layer Pattern

This week I wanted to write about something that's been playing around in my mind for months. Layering patterns. Last year I did makeup for a movie where it took place in a haberdashery and the male actors and I were discussing men's fashion and the importance of playing with pattern. It got me thinking about why women don't mix and match pattern in the same way. So I've come up with a few tips to help us take inspiration from the guys and start layering pattern.

SIZE

When layering multiple patterns you have to pay attention to size. You cannot do two or three pattern in the same size otherwise your outfit looks "off." Something has to be the hero pattern which usually means it's the biggest.

COLOR

Layering patterns in the same tones and hues is a great place to start. It also guarantees that your outfit will not only be cohesive, but will be very chic as well. In the outfit above the shacket that I'm wearing has a massive pattern on it, but you can't see it from farther away because the colors are black and charcoal. This almost adds a texture to the outfit rather than a pattern. The skirt, with white, pulls the eye and becomes the hero pattern even though it is smaller.

HOW MANY?

No more than three please. In order to follow the other two tips, up to three is where I would stay. Three is a very soothing number for our minds and eyes. Any more patterns and you might start to feel like you're wearing a costume rather than an outfit.
