Chambray (pronounce SHAM-bray) is such a staple in anyone's wardrobe these days. It is used in both men's and women's fashion, and it has a long history dating back to the 1500's. Let's dive into the world of chambray, and three ways you can wear it during the transition into fall as well as when the weather gets cooler.
WHAT IS IT?
You might look at chambray fabric and think, is this a thinner jean material. It is not. Chambray and jeans are not the same. According to the Landsend.com they state that a chambray is designed with a plain weave and is lighter and softer which is what makes it great for a shirt. Whereas a jean material is a twill weave and tougher and usually used for pants.
Chambray is made of cotton so it breathes well. It will keep you cool in dry heat, but is also a great layering piece for fall. My husband pointed out that it almost resembles linen. This was an excellent transition into my telling him the history of chambray...
THE HISTORY
While the fabric has its origins in Cambai, France from the 1500's, it made its way over to the United States in the 1900's where it is mentioned in a US Farmer's Bulletin which states that chambray is a great material for a farm hand because of it's lightweight feel and breathability. It also found its way into Navy fashion, and was a popular work shirt around this time supposedly coining the term "blue collar."
MODERN INTERPRETATIONS
Learning the history and origins of chambray was really interesting for me, and it made me rethink my choices for 3 Ways to Wear Chambray. I've chosen to mix and match with colors and styles that go against the "blue collar" stigma which I think is a completely modern interpretation.

OPTION 1
Starting off with a great way to transition your shorts to slightly cooler weather. I've taken my black lace shorts from the summer and added the chambray top. I always feel that a chambray top can take a BIG necklace because it has such a cool and laid back vibe. Pair this outfit with sandals for day and pumps for going out and you're taking this humble fabric to the next level.

Lace Shorts: Ann Taylor LOFT (mine are sold out, but these would be AWESOME!)
Shirt: Tommy Hilfiger
Necklace: J Crew Factory (no longer sold, but this one is great!)

OPTION 2
Replacing the shorts with a tweed woven skirt is another great transition piece. Again you can accessorize this outfit up, down, and all around for work or a Mama get together. The other great thing about this outfit is that you can add tights as the weather gets colder and boots of your choice for an all weather fall outfit.

OPTION 3
This is my work outfit, or my step it up option. This is a great midi skirt with an accordian leopard detail which elevated the shirt. It's completely work appropriate because you can do anything in this outfit, and it's also sit on the floor with the kiddos at the library for hours appropriate because of the midi skirt. Depending on where you're wearing this again the accessories become the game changers (especially the shoes).
