Just as you do with your accessories and makeup, your skin care can probably use a seasonal revamp. When you're spending less time outside you can go heavier on your serums and treatments. If you are still outside a lot, then you should wait until winter to bring in some of these heavy hitters. Also, please don't forget to put on sunscreen if you are out in the sun for more than 15 minutes...or at the very least wear a hat and sunglasses.
RETINOL
Basically, retinol helps change skin cells that are damaged into working ones. Is this a miracle treatment? Yes and no. Over the counter retinol can only take you so far, which is why it is imperative to take care of your skin early with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. If you have more in depth questions about retinol and the various forms I will refer you to a doctor. If you are just curious, then I will refer you to Caroline Hirons.
Another thought on this powerful serum. Retinol is usually not necessary for 20 year olds. When you get in your 30's your skin is slowing down so retinol can really help add that bounce back in. In your 40's and beyond it is a must. Your skin is really starting to show any damage that was done to it in your teens and 20's. Your overall health can also begin to show up in your skin and especially on your face. So please, take care of yourself starting today and have a healthier and happier you and skin for tomorrow.
ACIDS
When you are out in the sun a lot during the summer it is a good idea to take a break from intense exfoliation because even if you're wearing sunscreen your skin can still be damaged by the sun. Now that we are spending more time inside, it is a great time to amp up your exfoliation game. Try a glycolic toner from Pixi. The toning step is a great time for exfoliation. It happens before your serums and moisturizer. An exfoliating toner basically helps sluff off dead skin cells that are hanging out toward the surface of your skin. If you're using a BHA then the acid works a little deeper, but the exfoliation still occurs.
OILS
Adding in an oil to your moisturizer, or just before, can make a huge difference in your skin's ability to retain moisture and feel plump all day long. I know for me when the heaters turn on it wreaks havoc on my skin. I need oils in my life morning and night to feel comfortable all day long. Some of my favorites are from Paula's Choice & Bobbi Brown.
MOISTURIZER
In the summer you might have been OK with a lighter weight moisturizer. As the weather gets cooler, and the heaters are being turned on, you might find your skin is dry and needs more cushion at the end of your skincare routine. My go to's are Shiseido , Charlotte Tilbury, & Kate Somerville.
