Mother Earth Beauty

Earth day is tomorrow and I wanted to do something a little different. This look is not wearable for everyday life, however there are some things I wanted to share for anyone who is trying to create a character or a mood through makeup and photography. Let's get started.

As you can see from my before and after vs. the final product, I knew that my hair would not be playing a role in the look. I also knew that this makeup look with normal clothes was going to look a little crazy. So, how do you create something like Mother Earth through makeup and make it look like the picture that is in your head?

I've done a makeup look like this in the past so I was familiar with what was going to be in the frame. I also knew that because I was going to draw roots on my arms, I needed to go dark on the eyes otherwise things would get lost in translation. When you are creating a look like this, it is important to know what the end result is going to be. It doesn't have to be exact, in fact I changed tactics halfway through the tutorial based on how my face was receiving the eyeshadow, but you do have to have a good idea of where you're going.

My inspiration for these shots was Mother Earth waking up from winter and peaking through the dirt, roots, etc. and taking stock of what her world felt and looked like. It's not supposed to be political at all. If you, as the viewer, take something away from this beside "cool makeup/photo" I'm thrilled. However, my inspiration was truly to create the character of mother earth rising from the soil. However, if you are going to go political, make sure that your vision is clear and the end product comes across. If you are the makeup artist, talk to the photographer and get a clear picture of what they are looking for. If you're the photographer, please communicate to your makeup artist about what is going to be showing in the frame. No one wants to waste time on things that aren't going to be featured.
