Vogue Inspired Makeup: SJP

I've been a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker for a long time. I first discovered her in Footloose and some other dancing films of that era, before finding her in Sex and the City. I have found in all of her interviews that SJP is kind, honest, and very willing to share her creative process with others.

When I saw her cover for Vogue, I knew I had to recreate the look. Her cover shot, though gorgeous, did not lend itself well to recreating her makeup. Flipping through the magazine I found this amazing photograph of SJP spinning in a couture outfit. Her makeup is up to date with how she likes to wear her makeup in day to day life as well. The smokey eye looks amazing on her, and I recreated it for you this week.

I LOVED how this look turned out. It is simple makeup, but effective and gorgeous. When you wear a smokey eye it makes you feel more confident. Especially, if it is a more daytime appropriate one, compared to my 1920's version. This smokey eye can be worn wherever you're going that day without feeling too harsh. You can also swap out the skin toned colors for a more brown or berry toned smokey eye as well depending on what you are wearing.

The other thing that struck me about this look was that typically we don't see smokey eyes on "older" women. However, SJP almost always wears one now, and on PBS I've noticed that some of the "older" women are also starting to wear smokey eyes. I think this is amazing! I love that smokey eyes are not just for younger women. Older women in a smokey eye really works.

Mary Greenwell (the godmother of makeup) says that there's an age where you have to stop wearing a red lip, and then you can wear it again 10 years later. There is something about the aging process that makes a red lip look goofy around 40 and then great again around 50. I think it might be that way with a smokey eye.

Enjoy the tutorial tomorrow, and seriously consider playing around with a smokey eye no matter your age. Again, you can always tone it down or amp it up as the occassion demands.
